OrbKord names the chords you play.

It runs in the browser. Plays MIDI files, listens to your MIDI keyboard and turns piano recordings into MIDI.

OrbKord playing Memories of Paris. The chord panel reads D flat 7 sharp 9, with the notes on a grand staff, a lit 88 key piano and the piano roll below.

Hold notes. It tells you the chord.

OrbKord shows the chord name, the inversion, the voicing type, the intervals and how every note is spelled. The notes go on a grand staff too. Sustain pedal counts.

  • 63 chord shapes. Triads up to D♭7♯5♯9♭13.
  • Exact, jazz or simple names. One click to switch.
  • Spelling follows your key. 15 keys, so you get F♯ or G♭ where it belongs.
  • Bass split. Read the low notes as a slash chord, or keep them apart.

Piano recording

Upload an MP3 or WAV of piano. You get MIDI back and it opens in OrbKord.

How Audio to MIDI works

Your phone, as a breath controller

Pick the Air brass sound. Scan the QR code with your phone and blow into its mic. Harder breath, louder and brighter brass. Or use the touch pad on the phone.

Harmonise on. One key held, A4. OrbKord played F major 7 under it: F3, A3, C4, E4 and A4 lit on the keyboard.
One key held: A4. OrbKord played Fmaj7 under it.

Play one note. It puts a chord under it.

Turn on Harmonise and play a melody. Every note gets a voiced chord. Stay in the key, or go outside it. Choose chords with fewer notes or more notes.

Voicing slider goes from tight to open. Velocity and humanise for your notes and for the chords separately.

Sequencer

Record a melody. OrbKord turns it into a looping chord progression.

Progressions
190 in the packs, 108 major and minor, 82 modal. Or let the rule engine pick
Mood
22 to pick from. Nostalgic, Dark, Romantic, Triumphant and others
Comping
Block chords, Pop, Pop 2, Soul, Hip hop
Length
4 or 8 bars, 1 chord per bar or per half bar

Record Take keeps your own playing, melody and chords, as a MIDI loop. Export MIDI and drop it in your DAW.

Sequencer panel: Source Progression pack, Mood, Comping Block chords, Rate 1 chord per half bar, Length 4 bars at 100 BPM, Record Melody and Next Progression buttons.

Not only 12 notes

Set the tuning to 19, 31, 41 or 53-EDO, or load your own Scala .scl file. The staff writes real microtonal accidentals. The hex keyboard gives you one key for every step.

  • Quarter-tone sharp
  • Three-quarter-tone sharp
  • Quarter-tone flat
  • Three-quarter-tone flat
  • Flat, one arrow up
31-EDO with one key per step on the hex keyboard. Hexes are labelled with microtonal note names and colored by step. The staff shows a quarter-tone accidental.
31-EDO on the Iso hex keyboard. The colours and labels follow the tuning.

Glyphs. Stein-Zimmermann quarter tones for 31-EDO. Helmholtz-Ellis arrows for 41 and 53-EDO. Drawn with Bravura, the reference font for music notation.

Export. Export MIDI in a microtonal tuning writes MPE: one channel per note with pitch bend. Set your DAW track to MPE and the bend range to 48.

Chord names. These stay in 12-tone, so you still get a name you can read.

Look at it the way you play

Piano roll of the whole file under the keyboard, with the playhead.

Sound and export

Sounds

Synth, Rhodes, Grand piano and Air brass. The Rhodes and piano are sampled with 6 velocity layers. Reverb is a real convolution reverb.

MIDI

Export MIDI saves what you loaded, recorded or harmonised as a .mid file. Microtonal tunings export as MPE.

Video

Export plays your MIDI file from the start and saves a video of it. 1920x1080, up to 60 fps, with audio. MP4 when the browser can, WebM when not. Capture records live playing the same way.

Audio to MIDI for piano

Upload a recording. MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A or OGG, up to 30 minutes and 50 MB. Pick what is on it:

Pure piano
Just piano. 1 credit for every started 10 minutes.
Piano with noise or voices
Singing, talking, background noise, light instruments. OrbKord pulls the piano out first. 1 credit for every started 6:40.

You see three steps: Uploading, Transcribing, Done. The MIDI opens in OrbKord. It also stays in My transcriptions, so you can load it or download it later.

Piano only for now. Guitar, voice or full band will not give you good MIDI.

Audio to MIDI dialog: drop zone for MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A or OGG up to 30 minutes and 50 MB, credit packs, and the How credits work list.

PackPriceEach
5 credits$5$1.00
10 credits$8$0.80
15 credits$10$0.67

A 4 minute piano song costs 1 credit. A failed transcription gives the credit back by itself. Credits never expire. Buy them inside the Audio to MIDI window.

Why it costs this

Chords, harmoniser, tunings and export all run in your browser, on your computer. That costs us almost nothing per user, so the app is one price, once.

Audio to MIDI is different. Every recording runs on a rented GPU server and we pay for each minute. That is why it is credits. Piano with noise costs more because the piano gets separated from the rest first, which is extra GPU work.

Discount codes show up sometimes in the Bleu Orb YouTube videos.

FAQ

What do I need to run it?

A browser. Chrome or Edge if you want to use a MIDI keyboard, they have Web MIDI. Video export works best in Chrome. Nothing to install.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?

No. Load MIDI files, or play on the computer keys: A to ; play notes, Z and X change octave.

What is different in the free trial?

The trial is 7 days. It has almost everything. The full version adds 14 altered dominant chord shapes (like 7alt and 7♯5♯9♭13), the non-functional harmoniser style and guitar voicing search.

What happens after 7 days?

The app locks until you buy it. $15 one time on Gumroad. Your account and your transcriptions stay.

Is it a subscription?

No. The app is one payment. Only Audio to MIDI uses credits, and you buy those only if you want them.

How do I sign in?

Email and password, or Continue with Google.

How long does Audio to MIDI take?

Usually about a minute for a song. If the server cannot start your file within 4 minutes, you get the credit back and can try again.

What if the transcription is wrong or fails?

If it fails, the credit comes back automatically. For best results use a clean piano recording. Use Piano with noise or voices when there is singing or talking.

Can I use my own tuning?

Yes. Load a Scala .scl file. Notes snap to the nearest step, or use the 1 key per step mode on the hex keyboard.

Does microtonal MIDI export keep the tuning?

Yes, as MPE. One channel per note with pitch bend. Set the track to MPE and the bend range to 48 in your DAW.

Can I make videos for YouTube with it?

Yes. Export renders your MIDI file as a 1920x1080 video with audio.
